1. Choose the Right Location
- Pick a sunny spot (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).
- Soil should be well-drained and acidic with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5.
- Blueberries can handle partial shade, but they produce the best crops in full sun.
- Avoid areas exposed to harsh, drying winds.
2. Prepare for Planting
- If planting multiple bushes, group them together for better yields, spacing them 4-6 feet apart.
- Blueberries are shallow-rooted, usually 12 inches deep and 2–3 feet wide.
- Dig a hole 18–24 inches deep and 2–2½ feet wide.
- Place some prepared soil mixture in the bottom, then set the plant in with the top of the root ball level with the ground.
- Lightly pack soil around the root ball.
- Apply 2 inches of mulch (pine bark nuggets or pine needles) around the base to hold moisture and block weeds.
3. Make the Right Soil Mix
- Use 60% Canadian sphagnum peat moss and 40% pine bark mulch or pine bark nuggets.
- Pre-soak the peat moss in water, then mix it with the bark.
- Add compost if available to enrich the mix.
4. Watering
- Blueberry bushes need 1–2 inches of water per week during the growing season.
- Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.
5. Mulching
- Mulch helps keep roots cool and moist.
- Apply 2–4 inches of pine needles, pine bark mulch, or nuggets.
- Leave a small gap between the mulch and the trunk for airflow.
6. Fertilizing
- For organic fertilization, good options include:
- Nitrogen: blood meal, fish meal, coffee grounds
- Phosphorus & Potassium: bone meal, seaweed
- General nutrients & acidity: compost, aged manure, sphagnum peat moss
- You can also make a homemade liquid fertilizer:
- Mix 1 gallon of water with:
- 2 tablespoons fish fertilizer
- ½ tablespoon kelp fertilizer
- ½ tablespoon unsulfured blackstrap molasses
- Shake well and water the soil (not the leaves).
- Apply every 2 weeks during the growing season.

7. Pruning
- Begin pruning once bushes are 4 years or older.
- Best time: late winter or early spring before new growth.
- Remove dead, weak, or damaged wood to encourage healthy new shoots.
8. Maintenance
- Keep weeds and grass away from the base of the bush.
- Refresh mulch as needed.
- Check soil pH every couple of years to keep it in the acidic range blueberries prefer.
